Interest-Based Bargaining Institute

Now Accepting Applications

The Massachusetts Education Partnership (MEP) is pleased to announce that applications are now available for school districts seeking to transform their approach to collective bargaining through the 2018-19 Interest-Based Bargaining Institute (IBBI). Applicant labor-management teams will receive training and facilitation to move from an often adversarial process to one grounded in the full exploration of their shared interests.

The IBBI’s work is grounded in evidence suggesting that interest-based bargaining commonly leads to labor contracts that are more fully responsive to the needs of students and adults. Participating teams will receive eight hours of training on interest-based processes. At the end of this first training period, representatives from labor and management will caucus as separate teams and decide whether to adopt interest-based bargaining for their upcoming negotiations. If the parties mutually agree to proceed with this process, an additional eight hours of facilitation, designed to move the parties directly into their negotiations and deepen their IBB knowledge and experience, is provided. Program cost, inclusive of training and facilitation, is $3,500.

If you are interested in using Interest-Based Bargaining for your next round of negotiations, please fill out our application and/or contact Laura Dziorny
