The decision by MassINC to take on the role of education watchdog is welcome, and timely as the accountability phase of the state's reform act gets under way.

Executive director of the new research center is S. Paul Reville, who has been involved in the reform effort since the mid-1980's.

The research center is a logical move for MassINC, which was established with the broad purpose of promoting the growth and vitality of the middle class. No public sector function has more potential for furthering that goal than education.

Massachusetts' education reform law provides for testing and other accountability measures, but not methodical study of which aspects of the reform effort are working and which are not is lacking.

MassINC's new research center should help fill the gap.
